A DIY Guide to Laying Stepping Stones in the Garden
Are you annoyed with mud and dirt preventing you from walking through your beautiful garden? When faced with bad weather outside, chances are you find it difficult to make the most of your backyard space, but there is a smart solution to the problem. Laying stepping stones is a practical and at the same time beautiful way for you to reach any area in your garden, regardless of what weather conditions are. Read on to find out how to create pretty paths in the garden by laying stepping stones:
Collect the supplies for making a path – to lay stepping stones in the garden, you need to start by preparing a path. To do so, you should make sure you have several important tools at your disposal. Wooden pegs, a shovel, a measuring tape, a spirit-level, a rubber mallet and the stepping stones you have selected are what you are about to benefit from.
Make the path – now that you are certain you have all the required supplies close by, it’s time for you to prepare the path for laying your stepping stones. This is the most important part of the process, so take your time and don’t rush through the job. Start by marking up the path and keep in mind that the pegs should be installed at regular intervals. Next, you should dig the marked areas, but before that, you need to check whether the width of the trench matches the stepping stones. To do that, simply place the stones in their designated spots. If everything seems fine, you can start digging the trench. According to the experts, the trench should be 20 mm deeper than the thickness of the stepping stones you have chosen. As soon as you are done digging, you need to tamp down the trench surface and ensure it is completely even. A spirit level will let you tackle the task effortlessly. That’s all, your path is ready and you can start laying the stepping stones.
Collect the supplies for laying the stepping stones – you are about to finally lay your beautiful stepping stones, but to deal with the job like a pro you need to add a few additional tools to your arsenal. Your rubber mallet and a spirit level will be used once again, so don’t put them aside just yet. Sharp sand, a wheelbarrow, some cement and gravel should be added to the necessary supplies for laying the stepping stones.
Lay the stepping stones – start by mixing 5 parts of sharp sand to 1 part of cement – this mixture will serve as the glue that will keep the stones fixed in the trench. Now add the mixture to the trench of the first stepping stone and try to spread no more than 15 mm of it. After that, you should place the stepping stone in its designated spot and make sure it sticks perfectly to the mixture. To secure the stone, you can tap it down with the rubber mallet. Just keep in mind that you should be extremely gentle while tackling the task, otherwise you might cause ugly cracks to the stone. Once you are ready to lay the first stepping stone, follow the same procedure and add the rest of the stones to the trench. When you finish with the job, you will notice some gaps in the trench, but fear not – that’s where gravel is supposed to go. In case the material doesn’t match the appearance of your lawn, simply use soil and grass seeds to make the part of the stepping stone of the lawn.
Laying stepping stones in the garden is one of the easiest gardening tasks you can complete on your own. Follow this guide and you will be able to get a beautiful path through your garden in only a few hours.

Follow these guidelines, so that you can rely on useful raised beds for your garden. You can build the beds of stone, bricks or paving slabs, but different types of wood are what homeowners usually prefer. Raised beds shouldn’t be too wide, or else you will have no access to the middle area of the beds. Height is also important and it mostly depends on the type of plants you intend to grow. When choosing a location for your raised beds, avoid windy spaces, but go for sunny spots with even ground. Get more info at Fast Landscape Gardening!

For a well-looking lawn, you should steer clear of common mistakes non-experts often make. Don’t choose the kind of grass randomly, but base your decision on the climate and the everyday routine of your family. Although quality soil requires good fertilisers, try to apply the right amount of the product. Overwatering the lawn can be just as harmful to the grass, so avoid extreme amounts of water. Chemical-based products like fertiliser or herbicide may be dangerous for the grass, which is why organic alternatives are your best bet.
